Hypocrite of the Week: Sandra Bernhard
By Duane Wells
A few weeks ago Sandra Bernhard said during a performance of her one-woman show that Republican vice-presidential nominee Gov. Sarah Palin 'would be gang raped by my big black brothers in Manhattan.' Because of that joke Rosie’s Place, a Boston-based women’s shelter, has dropped the comedienne from the roster of talent performing at the organization’s upcoming benefit gala. Now Bernhard says her words were taken out of context and that she’s ‘terribly upset’ over the cancellation of her performance. Really?

Politicians Avoid Nuance of Same-Sex Marriage
Commentary
By Eric Hegedus
One particular issue has somehow avoided the spotlight in the race for the presidency: Same-sex marriage. And yes, of course, we're hearing plenty of standard talking points about the subject. But what we're gleaning all boils down to pro-and-con generalities. And we need more from Obama/Biden and McCain/Palin.

Out With Baby: Mommy, Mommy
By K. Pearson Brown
The first time my infant son uttered 'mommy' my heart sank a little. My reaction was unexpected. He wasn’t calling for me; he was scampering hands and knees into the arms of my partner. All along, from conception to birth, I had anticipated all of the advantages of our alternative family of three parents. What I had not predicated was my emotional attachment to the moniker 'Mommy.'

Proudly Out: The Blame Game
By Libby Post
First, Pat Robertson and the late Jerry Falwell blamed the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community for 9-11. Then, Fred Phelps, from the Westboro Baptist Church, led a chorus of radical Christian right wing nuts in a refrain of 'it’s the gays’ fault' when Hurricane Katrina decimated New Orleans. Now, it seems, we’re also the scapegoat for the current economic meltdown on Wall Street.

Left to Right: Sarah Palin, Joe Biden, John McCain
Politics from the inside OUT
By Duane Wells
The vice-presidential debate in St. Louis pits folksy Gov. Sarah Palin against statesman Sen. Joe Biden in a matchup of style vs. substance; Sen. John McCain becomes the first Republican presidential nominee to get personal about LGBT issues in the gay press; Google comes out against California’s Proposition 8; and Fall Out Boy says the ‘government shouldn’t legislate love.’

John McCain Better for All Americans, Not Just Gays
Op-Ed
By B. Daniel Blatt
Like all Americans, gay people need leaders who stand up to entrenched interests, who have effected real change. Sen. John McCain and Gov. Sarah Palin are such people. Given how both have expressed tolerance for gay people, judging us not by our sexual orientation, but as individuals, we can rest assured that they will not kowtow to the anti-gay minority in the Republican Party.

Hypocrite of the Week: Naomi Campbell
By Duane Wells
Supermodel Naomi Campbell recently blamed her now infamous confrontation with a flight attendant onboard a British Airways flight on everybody’s touchiness post 9/11. However because she knows full well that her well established anger management problems are to blame for her current troubles with British Airways, the leggy, catwalk queen Miss Naomi Campbell is the hypocrite of the week.

Singled Out: Chronicles of a Nobody Out and About in Los Angeles
Because life in LA is rarely like The L Word
By Mona Elyafi
Following a run-in with a gorgeous woman with flowing tresses entertainment publicist and all-around gay girl Mona Elyafi ponders her fetish for women with long, flowing, decidedly dark hair. 'Love is in the air and most certainly in the hair,' Mona says. 'It never really occurred to me until recently that, contrary to the general consensus, the first thing my eyes catch when on the prowl for potential female prey are not the tits or ass, but certifiably the long lustrous mane of hair flowing down a woman’s back.'
